OECS CONTINUES TO FIGHT ON DAY TWO
As team action continued today(Aug 27), Team OECS continued to make good progress in
the Men's and Veteran's divisions. The Men's team had the tough task of facing defending
champs Guyana who boasted having 2 players in the final eight of individual competition. The
score was 4-1 to Guyana, but the tie could have went to either team as OECS fought
valiantly. Dominican Gabe Rabess pulled off a major upset and created much hope for the
squad, as he flew past Guyana's number three  - Robert Fernandes in straight games (9/2,
9/3, 9/7). Paul Cyrus was on next and he gave it his all as he took his opponent - Julian Chin
to five gruelling games, before finally losing 7/9, 9/1, 1/9, 9/8, 4/9. The number ones were on
next with Charlie Sonson facing 3-time Caribbean champion Max Weithers. He sent a panic
through the Guyana camp in the first game, as he stole a 9/7 victory, before Max pulled
himself together to win the next two 9/5, 9/1, 9/0. Guyana was now ahead 2-1, and the win
was confirmed as Regan Pollard rushed past St. Lucian Jason Noon 9/4, 9/0, 9/6 in the 5th
string match. Now with no pressure to deal with, James Bentick played brilliantly to carry
Shawn Badrinauth to 5 long games in a repeat of the Round Robin tie in the Southern
Caribbean Championships last year. A year ago it would have been a walkover, but James
challenged the Barbados Open champion in a 1/9, 9/6, 3/9, 10/9, 5/9 defeat. The Veteran's
team compensated for this loss however, when they stormed to a 2-1 victory of the
Guyanese veteran team. Sherian Slater continues to be in dominant form as she crushed
Colleen Braithwaite 9/6, 9/2, 9/6 in the opening encounter. Jon Osman then sealed the
victory as he flew past Ian McDavid 9/1, 9/2, 9/5. Guyana then gained consolation as Alwyn
Callender defeated Vincentian Colin Alexander 9/2, 9/3, 9/7 in the Men's Over 40 match.
The Men will be having a rest as the Veteran's team takes on defending champs Barbados in
Wednesday's matches.

OECS GOES DOWN FIGHTING ON DAY ONE

As the Senior Caribbean Squash Team Championships kicked off yesterday (August 25),
the OECS team got off to a somewhat promising start, losing by the closest of margins in
their opening ties. The Veteran team started the day with a 1-2 loss to Trinidad and Tobago.
The only win came from Sherian Slater(Women's Over 40) who defeated 3/9, 9/2, 10/8,
9/1; while Colin Alexander (Men's Over 40) lost to John Holley 1/9, 5/9, 1/9 and Jon
Osman (Men's Over 50) lost to Lewis Smith9/10, 5/9, 2/9. The Men's team faced hosts
Barbados in what turned out to be nail-biting battle. On first was St. Lucia's Jason
Noon(no.5) who put the team ahead as he defeated John Cumberbatch 5/9, 5/9, 10/8, 9/6,
9/7. Barbados however, came back to level at 1-1 when Marlon White defeated Paul
Cyrus(no.4) 9/7, 9/2, 9/0 and they then stole the lead when Gavin Cumberbatch edged out
Charlie Sonson(no.1) 9/6, 4/9, 7/9, 9/7, 9/5. The score was now 2-1, with James Bentick
having to face the pressure of defeating arch-nemesis Andy Gill. He had never beaten him
before, but he managed to turn the tables with an inpressive 7/9, 9/7, 9/0, 9/4 victory. With
the score now tied, Gabe Rabess couldn't handle the pressure and was crushed by Shawn
Simpson 9/5, 9/6, 9/5 to give Barbados the win.
The Men and Veteran teams will now have a hard task on their hands as they face Guyana in
Tuesday's matches.

STOUT ENDS RABESS' RUN

The excellent run of the sole survivor of the OECS Squash Team in the Caribbean
Championships finally came to an end when Gabe Rabess lost to rising star - James Stout in
the semi-finals of the Men's Plate. Stout later went on to win the plate against Guyana's
Julian Chin in the final. Gabe's wife (Marlene West, Jamaica) however, compensated for his
loss as she claimed her 4th Caribbean Women's Champion title as she triumphed once again
over Guyana's "squash queen" Nicolette Fernandes 10/8, 9/6, 9/2 in a repeat of the 2001
final.
