BASCOMBE PROVES HIS WORTH
Andrez Bascombe defeated Kinnison Cyrus 9/3, 9/7, 9/7
At the recently concluded OECS Junior Championships
in St. Lucia, Kinnison Cyrus emerged as the Boys
Under 13 champion, earning his spot on the OECS
team to the Caribbean Junior Championships. However,
the selection committee was fully aware that Andrez
Bascombe, who was unable to compete, would
probably have been the stronger player. Coincidentally,
the two candidates were scheduled to meet today (April
26) in the 1st round of the Boys' Under 19, so it would
be a perfect chance for Bascombe to prove the
selectors right.
In the first game, Bascombe played a slow, controlled
game to take a 5-1 lead. Some errors then crept in to
put the score at 5-3, but Bascombe regained his focus
to win the game 9/3.
In the 2nd game, Cyrus edged ahead to lead 3-2,
before Bascombe tied it up at 4-4. Both players then
battled all the way to 7-7, but it was Bascombe who
sneaked out the game 9/7.
The match continued to be close in the 3rd game, as the
players were tied up at 2-2 and 4-4. Mistakes from
Bascombe then gave Cyrus a 6-4 lead, but Bascombe
could not be deterred, winning the match 9/7. Hence,
Bascombe is rewarded with a spot on the OECS Junior
Team and will now face last year's Boys' Under 13 pick
- Diarra Venner.

PRIMUS/ROUDETTE: EXPERIENCE PREVAILS
Greta Primus defeated Aiko Roudette 9/0, 9/4, 9/4
In Women's Open 1st round action, it was youth vs experience,
as 15-year old Aiko Roudette took the court against the older
and more experienced Greta Primus.
In the first game, Primus took advantage of a seemingly
indifferent Roudette, using good tactical shots to run away with
the 1st game 9/0.
Roudette got back into the match in the 2nd game, fighting to
2-2, then 4-4. But Primus soon reverted back to her smart,
tactical game to win 9/4.
In the 3rd game, Primus maintained the pressure to reach match
ball at 8-1, but Roudette staged a last-minute comeback to
make it 4-8. The comeback effort was short-lived however, as
Primus wrapped up the game and the match 9/4.
CYRUS TOO CONSISTENT FOR VENNER
Mark Cyrus defeated Diarra Venner 9/1, 9/3, 9/7
Once again, two generations clashed on court, as
the Men's Open Consolation got underway. This
time it was 13-year old Diarra Venner pitted
against former national player Mark Cyrus.
The first game started out at a fast pace, with
Cyrus forging ahead 3-1. It was Cyrus'
consistency however, that won the points to give
him the 1st game 9/1.
Again, the 2nd game began at a fast pace, with
Venner going 2-1 ahead. Venner maintained the
lead to reach 3-2, before Cyrus pushed ahead
4-3. Well-placed shots from Cyrus then gave
him the game 9/3.
The match continued at a fast pace, with Cyrus'
consistency continuing to give him the edge. He
reached all the way up to 6-2, before Venner
slotted in some quick winners to steal the lead
7-6. But it wasn't enough as Cyrus triumphed in
the end, winning 9/7.
