Men's Open, Neville Greaves and Steve Ollivierre
took to the court to battle it out in the 1st round of
the Men's 40+.
In the first game, Ollivierre took an early lead to
reach 6-1 as Olliverre pulled off some quick,
wristy shots that Greaves had no answer to.
However, Greaves wasn't down yet, fighting back
with 5 successive winners (including 3 "ace"
serves) to level at 6-6. Errors from Ollivierre then
gave Greaves a game ball at 8-6, before he came
back to tie it up again at 8-8. Unfortunately, the
comeback was short-lived, as Ollivierre put a drop
shot into the tin to give Greaves the game 9/8.
The second game started off with both players
trading serves at 1-1, before Ollivierre forged
ahead 4-1. He never looked back, taking the
second game 9/4.
before Ollivierre once again levelled the game at 3-3. The
game continued in this trend, as the players were stuck to each
other at 5-5 and then 6-6. It was Ollivierre who broke the tie,
eventually winning the game 9/6. The fourth game was a blur,
as an increasingly confident Greaves raced to a 9/1 win, to
take the match into a 5th-game decider. The tiebreaker saw
Greaves reel away a string of winners to go 6-0 ahead, but
Ollivierre dug deep to reach match ball at 8/7, which lead to a
9/7 in the 5th victory.
Banfield proved too solid for Stanley
Dorneiden.
Banfield started out the 1st game with some
excellent drop shots to reach 3-0, before
Dorneiden levelled at 3-3. Errors from
Dorneiden then allowed Banfield to forge
ahead 6-3. Banfield then stepped up the
pace, attacking shots earlier to win the 1st
game 9/3.
In the 2nd game, it was Dorneiden who
took a 5-0 lead. Keeping the pressure on
Banfield, he reached 7-0. But once again,
Banfield played some amazing shots to take
steal the game 10/9. The final game was
quick, as Banfield took advantage of a
visibly tired Dorneiden 9/2. His reward...a
quarter-final matchup against no. 1 seed
