Fernandes "lines" up Hansen, West goes down fighting
After successfully negotiating the first round of qualifying in the $24k Hedonism II
Open in Jamaica, Caribbean Squash Queens Nicolette Fernandes (Guyana) and
Marlene West (Jamaica) had mixed fortunes in their final qualifying matches. In
the first round, Fernandes recovered from a game down to defeat Japan's
Chinatsu Matsui 7/9, 9/5, 9/4, 9/5 to set up a grudge match with Denmark's Line
Hansen. 5-time Caribbean Champ Marlene West made a successful return to
competitve squash after a 2-year lay-off, with a 2-minute 9/0 victory over Karen
Kronemeyer (Netherlands) after she retired with injury. In the final round,
Fernandes went on court to make amends for her 1/9, 1/9, 0/9 loss to Hansen in
May 2004. Showing her drastic improvement, the 8th-seeded Fernandes turned
the tables with a huge 9/5, 9/6, 9/6 upset over the 4th-seeded World no. 43,
much to the delight of the Caribbean supporters. Earlier, West squared off
against qualifying top seed and Canadian no. 1 Runa Reta and quickly took
control with a 9/1 win in the first game. However, Reta soon settled to eventually
emerge the 1/9, 9/5, 9/5, 9/3 victor after a 51-minute battle. Fernandes now
faces the no. 8 seed in the main draw - Dominique Lloyd-Walter (England),
while Jamaica's Karen Anderson makes her WISPA debut against no. 6 seed
Pamela Nimmo (Scotland).

Kyme nicks Bermuda "Fast Forward" title
Top-seeded Nicholas Kyme emerged victorious over no. 2 seed James Stout in
the battle of the nation's two pros for Bermuda's national title. Suitably
sponsored by Fast Forward Freight, Kyme secured a 'fast forward' to the PSA
Bermuda Masters Squash Championships to compete alongside the world's top
31 players. In the earlier rounds, both players cruised past their opponents to set
up the much-anticipated clash for the Masters wild-card spot. In a 50-minute
final match, the 24-year old Kyme retained his 2004 National title with a 11/8,
8/11, 11/3, 11/6 win over the 20-year old Stout.

Fernandes goes down fighting in British Open

Guyana's squash queen Nicolette Fernandes completed a successful debut in her
first  WISPA Gold event, advancing to the qualifying final of the world-renowned
British Open. In the first round, she recovered from a poor start to rout England's
Georgina Stoker 6/9 9/3 9/0 9/1. This set up a final showdown with Canadian no.
1 Runa Reta to claim a spot in the main draw. In their last and only meeting,
Fernandes emerged the victor, winning 9/2, 9/4, 9/4 in the 2003 Brest Open. It
would be no easy task this time, as Reta has since skyrocketed up to no. 35 in the
World Rankings. After trading the first two games 9/7, Reta charged ahead to
take the third game 9/5. Fernandes was not finished yet, and fought back clinch
the fourth game 9/6 to take the match into a tie-breaking 5th game. After 85
gruelling minutes, the 23-year old Canadian secured a main draw berth, winning
7/9, 9/7, 9/5, 6/9, 9/6. Fernandes now heads to Florida, where she will face the
6th seeded Canadian no. 4 in a potential upset victory based on her performances
here.

Kyme goes down in Cleveland
Bermuda's Nicholas Kyme, seems to be struggling with the new 11-point scoring system,
as the top-seeded qualifier suffered another upset in $22 Cleveland Classic. After recieving
a bye in the first round of qualifying, the 23-year old World. No. 85 was pitted against
England's Julian Wellings for a slot in the main draw. After a close 11/7 first game, the
Englishman never looked back, romping to a 11/7, 11/1, 11/2 victory.

Kyme loses heartbreaker in San Fransico
Top-seeded Qualifier Nicholas Kyme (Bermuda) was booted out of the Fog City
Open in the first round of qualifying, as he squandered a two-game lead against a
determined Ben Gould (Australia), ranked 166 places below him in the world
rankings. After clinching a 11/10 (12-10) first game tie-breaker, the Bermudan
maintained control of the match, winning the second game 11/9. This did not deter the
Australian, as he fought back to take the next three games and steal the match 11/7,
11/9, 11/4.

Stout loses in Aussie Open 2nd round
14th-seeded Bermudan James Stout cruised his way into the 2nd round of the
Australian Open, when he defeated Jason Groves (AUS) 15/9, 15/5, 15/6 in round one
of the $5,000 PSA Challenger event. His good fortune was halted however, as no.6
seed Jason Mudge (AUS) claimed a 15/8, 7/15, 15/11, 15/10 win over the 20 year old
from Bermuda.

Fernandes loses 5-game thriller
8th seeded Nicolette Fernandes was once again squeezed out of the Brest Open, as
she lost a 5-game marathon against Belgium's rapidly improving 17-year old Charlie
De Rycke. In the 2003 Brest Open, Fernandes suffered a close 2/9, 9/2, 9/5, 3/9, 2/9
loss to Dianne Desira of Australia. This was also the case in the 2004 event, as the
European Junior Champion showed great maturity to overcome the 20-year old
Guyanese squash queen, in a see-saw 2/9, 10/8, 5/9, 9/5, 9/4 victory. After losing a
crucial 2nd game, Nicolette took back the lead by taking the 3rd game. The Belgian
was not deterred however, and clinched the 4th and 5th games 9/5, 9/4.

Guyana's Nicolette Fernandes missed out on a main draw slot in the 2004
Hyder Open, as she succombed to qualifying 2nd seed Meredith Quick (USA)
in the qualifying finals. Nicolette had earlier trounced another American -
Margaret Elias, 9/6, 9/0, 9/7 in the first round. Nicolette put up a good fight in
the final round, but failed to overcome her more experienced opponent, losing
0/9, 7/9, 9/10.

Fernandes falters in Irish Open qualifying
Guyanese squash queen Nicolette Fernandes (at left) gave a valiant effort in the
$20k Irish Open qualifying first round. In the biggest tournament of her
professional career, she faced up against qualifying 5th seed Rebecca Botwright
of England. After close first and second games, the world no. 38 assumed her
authority to close out the match.
