ALEXANDER DOUBLES UP IN BVI AND FLORIDA
According to reports from Tortola in the British Virgin Islands, Vincentian Colin
Alexander won his respective age group in the BVI Open Veterans Tournament
earlier this month. Colin has taken on a new lease to squash after a somewhat
dissapointing performance in the Caribbean Championships this year, and is keen
on improving his game.
Colin clinched the double when he took the Men's 4.0 category in the Spear and
Jackson Florida State Open, running from November 7-9. In the first round, he
defeated Gregg Lecorgne 3-1, before defeating Erick Urra and Aaron Frazier to
win the title.
SLATER FIGHTS IN JAMAICA
After a hectic weekend schedule at the All Jamaica Junior Squash Tournament 2003,
Shane Slater returned to SVG with a 4th place finish in the Boys' Under 17 division
and 3rd place in the Boys' Under 19. The tournament featured some very close
matches especially in the Boys events, where the improving Kyle Gregg and David
Patterson held their own against their more favoured opponents - Chris Binnie and
Brad Low. Shane also played well against these four players but couldn't take control
in the respective matches. Saturday was his most gruelling day, when he played 4
matches in 5 hours and also hard to play 2 tough matches immediately following each.
Shane hopes to make a good showing in the upcoming US Junior Open, where he will
once again be meeting up with Chris, David and Kyle.
SLATER AND GLASGOW HANG ON BY DECIMAL POINTS
Shane Slater and Amber Glasgow held on tight to their number one positions in the
latest National Junior Rankings, ahead of Diarra Venner and Sherina Slater
repectively, by mere decimal points. Diarra Venner and Sherina Slater who had
recent wins in the Rotherley Junior Open in Barbados have been rapidly rising up
the rankings this season. Shane who now has an average of 5.075 resisted a
strong challenge from the 11 year  old Diarra Venner whose average is 5 points.
Amber Glasgow also held on with an average of 3.35 with Sherina a close second
with an average of 3.175. These four have distanced themselves from the rest of
the pack with the 3rd ranked juniors Dominic Olivierre and Aiko Roudette having
averages of 2.75 and 1.7 respectively. With the recnt closing of the Cyrus Squash
Complex, the Independence Junior Tournament has been cancelled and therefore
the only ranking tournament for October was the Rotherley Junior Open. Next up
is the Vita Malt Junior Squash Tournament which is still in the process of
confirming dates for the event. With the probability of the end of year rankings
being used to select the nominees for the National Sports Awards 2003, the
closeness of the rankings may get even more competitive.

JUNIOR SEASON TO HEAT UP
SLATER RETURNS FROM CAMP
As St. Vincent's top junior - Shane Slater, returned
back home from a 3-week venture at the Stuart
Dixon Squash Academy, he described his trip as a
great experience where was introduced to new
coaching methods and strategies while getting the
chance to meet top international junior players such
as Canada's Jennifer Blumberg and Ashley Clackson
and Columbia's Mariana De Reyes and Jairo
Navarro just to name a few. The camp featured over
30 participants from Canada, USA and Columbia
and was organised by Canada's successful junior
team head coach - Stuart Dixon (Level 5 Squash
Coach). The other instructors were Benjamin Uliana
(Level 4 Squash Coach), Kelly Guest (2002
Commonwealth Games Bronze Medallist in
Triathlon) and Cliff English (Level 4 Triathlon
Coach). The camp format was two hours on-court
and two hours off-court for five days a week from
8:30 to 10:30 and from 1:00 to 3:00, alternating
between two groups of players.

11-year olds creeping up in rankings
Diarra Venner
Sherina Slater
Two of the youngest squash players in Saint Vincent have been slowly making
their way up to the top of the leaderboard in the National Under 19 Rankings.
Diarra secured his spot as number two, with his first place and sixth place
finishes in the OECS and Caribbean Championships respectively, leading to
him overtaking 15-year old Dominic Olivierre (Junior Nationals Finalist).
Sherina moved up to number two over archrival Aiko Roudette (also Junior
Nationals Finalist) with her first and third place finishes in the OECS and
Caribbean Championships respectively. They will still have a hard task to take
out Shane Slater and Amber Glasgow who have been the most consistent and
improving players this year.

DASILVA OUT... LANG IN
Jason Lang
Andrew Dasilva
In an unexpected  last-minute drop-out by Andrew Dasilva
from his first appearance on the OECS Junior team, Jason
Lang was admitted as a replacement for Andrew's Under 19
spot. Although Jason did not participate in the OECS Junior
Championships, he was chosen based on past performances
and his level of play compared to the other players in the
OECS. The boys' team now comprises Diarra Venner,
Marlon James, Josh Defreitas, Shane Slater, Dominque
Rivers, Bradley Glasgow and Jason Lang.
SVG NATIONAL PLAYOFFS - DAY ONE
As the National Playoffs to select the team for the Senior OECS Squash
Championships kicked off yesterday (Friday 20th), some players evidently
used the occasion to settle scores between their rivals. The first match saw
Vonnie Roudette taking a comfortable 9/1, 9/3, 5/9, 9/2 over Greta Primus,
her spoiler in this year's National Championships and in many tournaments
before, as she recorded her first win over Greta in competition.
After much delay, it was time for 14-year old Shane Slater to take on
Neville Greaves in his bid to take the 4th spot on the Men's team. Shane
was dominant throughout, and took the match in three - 9/6, 9/3, 9/5. The
first of two replays of finals in the National Championships was next, as
James Bentick and Paul Cyrus battled for the number one spot on the team.
It was a much closer game than the last time, with James dropping a
surprising 9-0 game on his way to winning 9/6, 0/9, 9/8, 9/0. The next
match saw Dave Dasilva crushing John West 9/2, 9/1, 9/0 for a spot on the
Veteran's team. The next match also saw another convincing win being
made by Colin Alexander over Steve Olivierre, winning 9/0, 9/3, 9/5. Steve
then stayed on court to take on Joseph Heavener in a much closer game,
with Steve being stretched to four in his 9/6, 5/9, 9/6, 10/8 victory. The final
match of the day was between the two top junior players Shane Slater and
Dominic Olivierre. It was once again the match of the day (as was the case
in the finals of the National Championships), as the crowd was thrilled with a
gruelling 7/9, 9/2, 9/3, 6/9, 9/3 triumph by a determined Shane to confirm
his position as the best junior in the country. And ironically, Shane will now
have to face none other than the father - Steve Olivierre in Saturday's
matches.
Slater and Bentick retain titles
Top seeds James Bentick and Sherian Slater easily retained their national titles in the
Men's and Women's Open respectively. James Bentick overcame veteran player Paul
Cyrus in the finals while Sherian Slater had the better of Greta Primus in the Women's
finals. Colin Alexander also took the Mixed Veteran's Over 40 Title with a win over
Sherian Slater in the finals.

At the recently concluded AGM, Sherian Slater was once again chosen to be President of
the SVG Squash Association. The executive has changed a bit with some new members
taking up positions.

2003 OFF TO A GOOD START

The vincies returned home with all smiles after the Black Knight International Graded
Open. This senior team comprised of Vonnie Roudette, James Bentick, Sherian Slater and
newcomer to senior tournaments, rising star - Shane Slater. They fought off competitors
from Denmark, USA and Barbados. Shane Slater gave good account for himself, winning
the plate event of the Men's D category after a disappointing 1-3 loss in the first round.
Vonnie Roudette celebrated winning her first tournament match overseas by defeating
Lizza Hanner of USA 3-1. Although losing a nail-biting 5- gamer in the Semi-finals, she
finished in 3rd position for the Women's D section. Sherian Slater flew past her opponents
until she met her rival Lilianna Seale. Sherian wanted to avenge her loss to Lilianna in 2000
but couldn't muster a win and lost 9-1, 9-1, 9-2. James Bentick also had a tough clash
with Andy Gill whom he also lost to before in the Southern Caribbean Championships. But
the same score arised, with James losing 3-2.

VINCY POSSE SUCCESSFUL

A group of the top vincentian juniors came home with a haul of awards in the recently
concluded Vita Malt Junior tournament in trinidad, held over the independence weekend.
They were also joined by oecs compratiot Melissa Rivers and played against a field of 106
players from St. Vincent, Trinidad and St. Lucia. The boys team included local number one
- Shane Slater who placed third in the under 15 age group, losing the semis to archrival
Simon Ramchand by the loss of one final point (on a stroke call!!!). The other two boys
were Bradley Glasgow who played exceptionally well for his ability and won the award for
most outstanding sportmanship. The star of the team, and probably the entire tournament,
was young Diarra Venner. He demolished his trinidadian opponents in the under 11
category without losing a game. Futhermore, he won awards for outstanding performance
and most improved player. The girls also did well with Amber Glasgow placing 4th in a
competitive under 15 age group which was a combination of under 13 and 15. Aiko
Roudette playing in the Under 13 won the second place trophy. The tournament also sees
Amber Glasgow retaining two number one positions - national number one under 19 girl,
oecs number one under 15 girl.

BENTICK AND SLATER LEAVE FOR CAC GAMES

Top players Sherian and James Bentick have left for the CAC games in El Salvador. They
have been undergoing intense training for the competition and should bring some good
results.

The island's rising stars will be kept busy as the Barbados Squash Rackets
Association announces another tournament to the already busy tournament
schedule for the rest of the year. The Rotherly Junior Open will be played from
October 3-5 at the Barbados Squash Club and may cause much movement in the
rankings list for November. The other junior rankings tournaments for 2003 are
the Independence Junior Squash Tournament, the Vita Malt Junior Squash
Tournament, the Toshiba Copycentre Junior Open, the Canadian Junior Open and
the US Junior Open. Shane Slater and Amber Glasgow have been leading the list
for the entire year so far and are in good form to continue doing so.
